THE STATE, INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND CIVIL SOCIETY DIALOGUE ABOUT THE RIGHT TO FOOD

With the presence of representatives of FAO, United Nations, Parliamentary Front against Hunger, MAGAP (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries) and the Foreign Ministry, the event for the launch of the Observatory of the Right to Food and Nutrition 2011 and the report “Land and Power”, took place in Ecuador, documents made by civil society institutions in Ecuador.
The event was attended by Assemblyman Pedro de la Cruz; Program Coordinator for Food Sovereignty at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Jorge Samaniego, the Regional Coordinator of the Platform of Human Rights, Democracy and Development (PIDHDD) Pablo de le Vega, the Regional Coordinator of the CRECE Campaign for Oxfam, Asier Hernando Malax-Echeverria, among others.
Ambassador Mauricio Montalvo Samaniego, former permanent representative of Ecuador to the UN Offices and Specialized Agencies in Geneva, was the moderator of this event.
During this act Undersecretary Lilia Rodriguez said that Ecuador establishes in its Constitution the right of individuals and communities to have a safe and permanent access to healthy, sufficient, and nutritious food, locally produced, preferably in correspondence to their diverse cultural identities and traditions.
She also highlighted the right of citizen participation that includes the new Constitution, which allows citizens, both individually and collectively, to participate having a leading role in decision-making, planning, management of public affairs as well as popular control of state institutions and society and its representatives.
